Car Free Day – 22 September 2025
World Car-Free Day was celebrated by BusLink and CityLink services offering free bus travel. All CityLink services across Whangārei and the Far North Link’s Mangonui-Kaiatai route were free all day. Spot prizes were given out in Whangārei to bus passengers and people using walking and cycle tracks and Far North passengers had giveaways from drivers.
Car Free Day was also celebrated by Marion, age 94, who uses CityLink buses to stay active and independent. “I love getting out,” she says. “I enjoy walking the Loop on sunny days and chatting with people. The bus makes it easy.” You can read her story and watch her film HERE
Bus Fares
Fares vary on BusLink routes. You can check your fare by clicking on your route at the bottom of this page. Fares increased on BusLink regional routes by $0.50c per journey on 1 August. CityLink fares from 1 August are:
Adult single – $3.00
Child single (5-18 years) – $2.00
Kids 0-4 years travel free on all services.
Community Service Card holders
Community Service Card (CSC) holders travel for half price. You will need to travel with your Community Services Card and show it to the driver on boarding the bus.
